Not in My Studio – Making Art on the Road

I’m not in my studio this week and haven’t been making art on the road as I’d like since leaving Arizona at the end of June. I feel like I hit a wall.

My art supplies didn’t arrive until a week after we settled in. In the meantime, I found used, like new easel, and purchased it for temporary use. It was much smaller than I wanted but think I can make it work.

I also spent time focusing on the business side of art in preparation for my upcoming show at one of the local wineries.

At Least Trying to Do Something

I am in a rental now and didn’t want to damage any of the house with my painting activities. I set it up in the backyard on a table that was provided. I put the easel on the table to bring it up to a height that was comfortable. I prefer to paint standing up. I had bought a smock at a yard sale and wore it to protect my clothes.

I tried to paint. I had limited art supplies. That’s supposed to be a good thing, but for me it wasn’t helpful. It was terribly hot, and I was not inspired. In the middle of all this, I had set up a birthday celebration for the July birthdays in my family. We had 22 people attending a taco buffet birthday party! It was fun but exhausting!

A few weeks went by and I told myself I would finish two paintings by the end of July. I settled for starting two paintings by the end of July.

The first painting required a new source. In keeping with the “Wine, Women, and Song” theme, I spent some time looking at Pinterest and other references to come up with an idea. I finally settled on a stylish woman standing in front of her bicycle, on the moon, with a glass of wine in her hand! Oh! I also wanted bubbles!

I hadn’t used any photo editing software for over a month and was worried about how hard it would be. I found it came back to me rather easily, and I came up with the following source to use for my next painting.

I then went back to the process of building up layers of washes and collage for the background. I used a bit of modeling paste to add texture to the moonscape. I then sketched in the figure and bubbles and started painting. This still has a way to go, but here it is in the initial process. I will move on to using oils next to give it depth and richness.

Art Show at Plumb Cellars

After some back and forth getting the dates settled, I finally set up my artwork in a local winery, Plumb Cellars, in Walla Walla, Washington. I thought they did a good job with the way they set up the paintings for display. All these paintings will be available for sale, although I’d miss them!

An artist’s reception is scheduled for the first Friday in September (9/6/2024)to coincide with the ArtWalla Art Tours. This will be my first time participating in such an event and I’m excited and nervous. Wish me luck! I will send an invite to friends who live near enough to attend. The winery has live music every weekend and is a fun place to visit. They also have an excllent Viognier!

Takeaways

Sometimes you can’t do it all. Spending time with family to celebrate major milestones is a priority for me. I’m all about preserving old relationships and building new ones. Thank you all who are part of my online art community.
